About the project

The thr34d5 medialab proposes two artistic investigations with the kombucha biomaterial (bacterial cellulose). Both the serigraphy and the mask acquire an in-between status through the peculiar materiality of kombucha. As otherness confronts the known grounds of the citizen-spectator, it offers a space to co-design and build our views of the world, beyond environmental and social crisis.

Thanks to the little cultural anchorage that kombucha pellicle has, it is one of the best mediums to prototype societal models redefining our social contract in the human society and within. This thr34d5 applied-research, in making use of several cultures from pre-modern societies to the very digital stack we live in, aims at defining a new condition for the expression of the Self; from Consumption to Care.

thr34d5 is a medialab for social resilience. Throughout our various applied researches we aim to foster resilience around peculiar objects, anchored in both the digital and physical spaces.

Our lab combines crafts and open source methodologies to deliver community-oriented designs, inclusive by nature, promoting counter-cultures and critical thinking. As such, thr34d5 is an NGO fighting proletarianization, and promotion diversity and auto-determination.
