The ‘Red Comet’ is a running shoe, designed to be used on Mars. It’s designed to prevent the loss of muscle mass and bone density on the red planet.

The gravity of Mars corresponds to 38% of the Earth’s gravitational force. Unfortunately, low gravity is detrimental for the human body. The first Mars settlers will therefore suffer from the effects of low gravity. ‘Red Comet’ combats those effects with integrated weights to increase the wearer’s mass, stimulating the body as if the user was exercising on Earth.

The project is born from a passion about Mars exploration and running.

The shoes are 3D printed so that they can be manufactured by anyone, anywhere on Mars. The weight of each shoe is 7.5Kg.

I have always been passionate about space exploration, and more specifically Mars exploration. What intrigued me most wast to think about the possibility of human beings one day living on another planet. I started thinking and speculating about what their lives might look like. What type of meals will they eat ? What will their houses look like ? What will their clothes be like ? Etc… The aspect that fascinated me the most about Mars was its low gravity ( 38% the one of Earth ). I then speculated that Mars inhabitant will maybe need to wear weights inside their clothes to be the same weight as on Earth. And that was the starting point for my Red Comet running shoes.

Nolan Le Goff graduated with a design bachelor’s degree in 2023 from the Design Academy Eindhoven. His two graduation projects were “Team up”, a multiplayer gaming controller, and “Red Comet”, a running shoe for Mars. He works in the fields of interactive and speculative design.
