About the project
GRANES aims to integrate digital technologies into the traditional silversmithing craft of Ioannina (NW Greece), enhancing artisans’ skills while preserving their artistic value.
Collaborating with TimAp Design Studio and CTRLZAK Art & Design Studio, the project fosters innovative design methodologies. Key contributions from experts in engineering, ethnography, and humanitarian studies further enriched the program. Initiated in 2022, it includes a repository of 3D digitized artifacts and a virtual tour of traditional techniques, showcasing the fusion of tradition and innovation in silversmithing.
About the approach
Our hybrid design and production methods implemented in this project had a twofold aim. First, to preserve and enhance these traditional techniques, and second, to introduce innovative approaches that complement and enrich the craft.
Ioannina silversmithing artifacts derive their artistic value and soul from the skilled hands of local artisans. This project envisions to augment the skills of local artisans with cutting-edge tools and techniques, enabling them to create even more intricate and innovative works of art that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Ioannina region.
