About the project

Camp and Go addresses environmental challenges of waste management in outdoor recreational areas, particularly in camping sites. Drawing on statistics about plastic waste in Portugal, the project proposes a recycling cycle that could convert discarded materials into camping equipment. Four products are suggested: a Triangle Rope Fastener for securing tents, a Tent Peg designed for handling, a Carabiner for connecting components, and a Portable Ashtray that could help prevent cigarette pollution. The concept explores how collecting and transforming waste generated in the environments where products would be used might create visible incentives for sustainable practices among outdoor enthusiasts.

About the Project’s approach

Camp and Go explores distributed design principles by proposing a model for turning environmental challenges into practical solutions. The project suggests making designs and production methods available to camping communities, enabling local adaptation. The concept envisions engaging campers as both waste collectors and beneficiaries, creating a participatory loop that could build environmental awareness through direct action. The proposal considers how waste streams might become value-added products, establishing new resource cycles in recreational contexts. The approach connects individual behaviors, community experiences, and environmental considerations, suggesting how sustainable practices might enhance outdoor enjoyment.

About the collective

Ana Pinheiro, Juliana Amaro, Filipa Borges, and Jessica Leonardo are Visual Arts and Technologies students at Politécnico de Lisboa with an interest in environmental sustainability and outdoor recreation. Their project represents an academic exploration of waste management challenges in natural settings. As design students, they researched environmental statistics and camping practices to inform their conceptual solutions, approaching the work as a learning experience. Their process involved researching user needs and environmental issues to develop concepts that address both practical concerns and sustainability objectives, demonstrating how design education can engage with environmental challenges.
