Breaking the Loop is an immersive walk through installation exploring our relationship with the environment through architecture, sound, and movement. Visitors journey through three interconnected stages: Echoes of Home, Fractured Earth, and Seeds of Renewal, moving from nostalgia to disruption and finally to hope.

Inspired by the idea that climate change is often perceived as an endless cycle of destruction and temporary recovery, the installation invites visitors to physically break that loop. Familiar environmental and household sounds inspired by South Asian landscapes gradually transform into fragmented soundscapes before opening into a space of light, living plants, and renewal.

Rather than presenting environmental information through facts alone, the project creates a sensory experience that encourages visitors to pause, reflect, and reconsider their relationship with the natural world.

About the project’s approach

Breaking the Loop combines architectural thinking with immersive installation and sound design to create a multisensory public experience. A lightweight bamboo framework and layered fabric surfaces shape movement, light, and acoustics, while three original sound compositions, developed in collaboration with musicians and sound artists, guide visitors through the installation.

The project explores acoustic spatial design, where sound is experienced as part of the architecture rather than as background audio. Speakers integrated within the enclosed structure create an evolving sonic environment that responds to each stage of the journey.

The installation also embraces regenerative design principles through renewable materials, modular construction, and living plants that are grown during the project’s development and replanted after exhibition. By combining environmental storytelling with collaborative practice, the project encourages audiences to engage with climate awareness through experience, reflection, and collective imagination rather than instruction.
