About the project
The accessibility tile is a 3D printed tile, made from PHA polymer, which is biodegradable in all biotopes and does not contribute to microplastics. I am collaborating with body activist Cath Borch Jensen to develop this further.
The first prototype of interlocking tiles can be placed over different types of already existing grounds, to allow all types of users to access spaces that may otherwise be inaccessible. The wave panel design is slightly raised to help increase traction and drainage holes account for water management. To further this project in an open source manner, over the course of the residency, I would like to focus on creating a 3d-printable modular design that can be folded like origami in some way, as a personal care mat that wheelchair users could stow in a car or on their person. Wheelchair users often cannot comfortably roll over grass, cobblestones or sand, which puts limits on their activities around the city. By literally putting the power in the hands of the people and community, I hope that more of the city can become more accessible for us all.
