About the project
OpenTechPark is a citizen’s initiative from Greece that advocates for science and technology parks to promote open-source technologies and the social and cooperative economy.
The Region of Epirus in Greece intended to invest millions of euros and acres of land to create a Silicon Valley-inspired hi-tech park. This was decided without any public deliberation on what kind of technology park the city needs, if any. In reaction, some locals created a citizen initiative for an open-tech park. A technology park, built with public money on public land, should promote pluralism and serve the local community. Many entities in Greece produce open-source technologies and could be housed in such a park. A year-long public deliberation resulted in proposals for a commons-oriented technology and business development that would focus on the local economy, society, and environment. The initiative is ongoing, and all developments are documented on our website.
