About the project
NeoSine is a device that aims to help reduce and attenuate the noise level inside neonatal incubators. Through active noise cancellation technology and music therapy, the sound pressure level that reaches the ear canal of premature patients is decreased. NeoSine is capable of solving two problems, the environmental noise inside the incubator and the hearing deprivation of sounds such as the heartbeat, breathing or voice of its mother/father, which it would receive while in the womb.
The project design process was carried out in collaboration with the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, and thanks to interviews with professionals and visits to the NICU, it was possible to identify the problems related to the auditory environment of these spaces. Premature patients suffer effects due to high decibels, which can reach a value between 70 and 100 dB, thus generating irregularities in the auditory and cognitive development of newborns and the appearance of stress or changes in their vital signs.
NeoSine’s design process is currently in the prototyping phase. The development of the three-dimensional model has been carried out and prepared for its possible manufacture and industrialization. In addition, a process of selection of materials and industrial processes, usability and ergonomics analysis, cost analysis (for the manufacture of 1000 units), as well as an analysis of the product life cycle, have been carried out. Through FDM 3D printing, a 1:1 scale prototype has been made, together with all the external and internal parts, in order to observe its real representation and dimensions.
