LOCAL RESPONSE, GLOBAL NEED – DESIGN RESPONSES TO SHIELD MASKS exhibition shows how distributed design is an approach that suddenly received great attention as a result of the mask-cutting patterns and instructions that were made available online during the COVID-19 crisis. In cooperation with the Vienna Design Week, the Creative Europe Distributed Design Platform brings together projects that go far beyond simple homemade handicrafts in the exhibition LOCAL RESPONSE, GLOBAL NEED. These demonstrate how communities of designers and makers have found their own ways of assuming responsibility in the crisis. The objects are representative examples of a range of design solutions from around the globe and were produced on the basis of open templates in Vienna’s Happylab. Together, they provide proof that open source, decentralized production and democratic design can combine to protect us.
With contributions from the MIT Center for Bits and Atoms (USA), Maker’s Asylum (Mumbai, India), Prusa Research (Prague, Czech Republic), Science Camp (Basra, Iraq), Casa Criatura (Olinda, Brazil) and BATCH.WORKS (London, United Kingdom).
