Short Description

wfh - desk reacts to the current change in the world of work dealing with the demands of home office

Detailed Description

The project „Work from home” reacts to the current change in the world of work, dealing with the demands of the home office. The result is a desk that can be easily adapted to the optimal size with simple movements, even adjusting for working whilst standing is possible. The height can be gradually adjusted between 64 cm and 94 cm. It provides enough space for everyday work and draws a line between workspace and living room through the use of a folding element. As the power and connection cables discreetly disappear in the cable duct, they do not disrupt the living atmosphere.
Karuun is a sustainable and rapidly growing raw material, due to the rattan palms aversion towards monoculture growth, the cultivation promotes afforestation and the preservation of the rainforest. These factors go hand in hand to form a sustainable supply chain of which both the local population and the climate benefit.

Project Details

Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?

Back pain due to incorrect posture was the most common cause of sick leave in Germany 2019. This could be counteracted with a height-adjustable and ergonomic desk that makes an awareness for ergonomics in the home office.

More than 90.000 km of tropical rainforest are cleared by fire every year in order to use the area for livestock and arable farming. The Material Rattan naturally forms a symbiosis with neighboring trees; it needs the rainforest to thrive. As a natural raw material, it grows like a liana and is harvested in the most eco-friendly way – by hand by local farmers. Growing and harvesting rattan benefits these farmers, so protecting the environment is in their best interest.

Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?

The material Karuun is a sustainable and rapidly growing raw material, due to the rattan palms aversion towards monoculture growth, the cultivation promotes afforestation and the preservation of the rainforest. These factors go hand in hand to form a sustainable supply chain of which both the local population and the climate benefit.

Does your design use principles of distribution and open source?

Beside the wfh - desk I have created an open-source scale in order to optimally adapt the home workplace to your own personal size.

Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?

The new material Karuun creates an awareness of responsible and sustainable material. Additionally, the material is very durable and the desk easy to assemble which makes the working table easy to move with. Which can lead to a personal relationship with the workplace through longevity.
