SHipping modular construction shipping container recicled circular economy covid-19 covid hospital health

Short Description

SHipping is a new concept of modular hospitals made of recicled shipping containers.

Detailed Description

SHIpping pretends to solve the current problem which affects to the field hospital settled due to COVID-19. Using the same principle of modular construction, SHIppings proposes using shipping containers, in order of building solid structures of up to 6 or 12 heights, depending of the case, where settled every patient and staff related to the virus, with all the amenities.

Curiously, shipping containers, also, are accumulated in most of the large cargo ports around all the world. Why? When China, the world's largest exporter, uses them for trading, they do not want to recover them empty (their imports are much lower than exports), since that their value is less than the shipping costs.

In other words, there is a high availability at almost zero price. This means that, if the cost of its conditioning is optimized, which is the purpose , it would be generated a high value product (HVP) at very low prices.

Project Details

Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?

It pretends to fight against COVID-19. it is important to highlight the possibilities of these shipping containers in the world’s poorest areas, where hospitals are much more modest or, even, do not exist. Specially, now, it can be important in the Southern Hemisphere, where the standard of living is lower than in the North one. Basically, because the winter is about to begin there and it may accelerate the virus spread exponentially.

Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?

All the modules could be maded of recicled shipping containers. Curiously, shipping containers, also, are accumulated in most of the large cargo ports around all the world. Why? When China, the world's largest exporter, uses them for trading, they do not want to recover them empty (their imports are much lower than exports), since that their value is less than the shipping costs.

Does your design use principles of distribution and open source?

All the calculus and drawings are available in internet.

Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?

It pretends to show how we can fight against COVID, using recicled materials and lean modular construction. The main advantages of modular construction are the following ones: lower costs, delivery time and environmental impact; higher quality, energy-efficient and versatility, less material exposure, personal and bureaucratic obstacles and it is considered as a safer construction than the traditional one. The result is a green solution affordable to everyone.
