biodegradable coffee ground biodiversity waste resource

Short Description

a biodegradable single-use coffee cup out of coffee ground

Detailed Description

The SeedCup concept recycles waste and turns it into a new product. Recycling is nothing new here, but the innovative part is that we recycle the waste, or coffee grounds, exactly where it is generated as garbage, to produce a new product, which in turn is used exactly there. This way we do not only save emissions from transportation and the construction of new infrastructure for our product, but we also save the enormous resources of disposable coffee cups, made of paper and plastic base, which after only 15 minutes of use end up in the trash and then in the incinerator. But our cycle does not end there: The cup that decomposes in contact with moist soil within 48 hours releases a seed of a local plant and gives everyone the opportunity to consciously participate in the design and greening of public spaces, thus promoting biodiversity within cities.

Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?

We are trying to create a new circular production and consumption circle within Cafés. As we use the resources, which occur on site, in order to give them a second life by using them as a resource for the product which is needed there. Moreover as the cup is 100% biodegradable and a good fertilizer, we take these advantages by closing the biological circle.

Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?

With our concept we challenge the status quo and create an awareness within society to realize and use waste as a resource. With the decentralized production machine, we create on the one hand an unprecedented product and thus a completely new user experience and on the other hand a possible base for approaching the issue of recycling and production in other areas in the same way.
