Short Description

Nuclée is an eco-designed mood lamp made of renewable materials.

Detailed Description

Settled in Hualien, on the east coast of Taiwan, the Kavalan aboriginal tribe is expert in the use of banana fiber. I had the chance to exchange and work with them, observing their way of life, culture and techniques.

The banana flesh, big waste from this traditional extraction, turns out to be interesting for its translucency and its graphic qualities. By a particular technique (drying, refining, stabilization), the solidity of this plant tissue is increased. Finally exploitable, this new material is sublimated by a sober shape, inspired by the internal structure of the banana tree stem.

Materials : Banana flesh, bamboo, black granite, LED, assembly elements

Project Details

Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?

Nuclée's materials are renewable and give new life to neglected materials which are seen as wastes, in particular banana flesh which is thrown away after the extraction of the banana fiber.

Moreover, the production of this lamp is responsible, durable and circular.

Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?

This lamp with Asian touches offers a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere. It is manufactured with care and rigor by craftsmen to last over time. Created by hands and not by machines, in a limited series, it is opposed to mass consumption and is part of the slow design approach.
