Bespoke parametric DIY Prosumer CNC DesignForDisassembly Mass-customisation

Short Description

A new DIY furniture label enabling a prosumer culture with the help of local CNC fabrication.

Detailed Description

Inspired by Italian design master, Enzo Mari’s 1970’s project – “Autoprogettazione”, our furniture is co-designed with the end-user and made to measure on-demand to individual requirements. Our project takes Mari’s a step further, utilizing digital manufacture and parametric design, allowing a level of customization – all the while still emphasizing Mari’s sentiment about people understanding the nature of quality.
By connecting customized parametric design with bespoke digital fabrication, we hope to shift the paradigm from centralized mass production to local personalized making. Moving beyond the dichotomy of consumers and producers, and instead promoting a 'Prosumer' culture where people have a greater connection and understanding of the objects that they live and work with.
We encourage people to try out a new world of digital making, which we hope will positively transform the way society produces things, catering to needs, valuing resources and experiencing the joy of making.

Project Details

Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?

By looking beyond the centralized mass production models of the 20th Century which alienated both producers and consumers from the holistic creation of our material culture, our project looks to promote understanding of materials and processes and foster a sense of pride and creativity within people that is so fundamental to human well being.

Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?

By making only on demand, we reduce material consumption to only when needed and our design philosophies are founded on the principles of Design for Disassembly (DfD, promote the use of materials that are recyclable or at the least from sustainable sources, allowing them to be harvested for recycling and or/ re-manufacture after use.

Does your design use principles of distribution and open source?

Yes, our concept is based on the distributed manufacture. Utilizing the growing network of local CNC fabricators to manufacture our designs locally. Our DIY concept, allows people to download our designs and amend them to their needs if required.

Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?

We believe that if people are enabled to create their own bespoke objects that suit their needs and purposes directly, then less resources will be used, less waste created and more objects taken care of and cherished.
