Short Description

Empowerment by creating a DIY platform for people in underserved communities of the Global South.

Detailed Description

We are creating the first inclusive app for step-by-step instructions for and together with people in underserved communities of the Global South. The sharing platform is called “DOOIY” and offers all kinds of solutions that can change peoples’ lives for the better, e.g. how to build a water filter or a solar lamp, grow food in a very small space or found a sanitary pad business with little, locally available resources. Therefore, we bring together creative solutions from local change-makers, socialpreneurs, universities and international development projects, make them accessible and create reach. By building a community, we empower people to help eachother and co-create new solutions.
The DOOIY app is free of charge, battery-friendly and consumes little data. We will allow offline use, support low-literate users and provide community translations in many languages. For organisations, DOOIY is a free tool to make their great work digitally accessible and measure their impact.

Project Details

Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?

More than 2 billion people around the world face similar challenges every day – for example lacking safe housing, food security, sanitation, electricity or sufficient income opportunities. Many of them have a smartphone and access to the internet. But they don‘t find relevant solutions for their challenges here although the internet offers a huge opportunity to spread innovations that could make a real difference to their lifes.
Actually, most of those innovations are on the internet – but they are not accessible. If you take a look on platforms like YouTube you will realise that most of the do-it-yourself content comes from and is for people in the Global North. For someone who lives for example in an informal settlement it is really difficult to find something that is relevant and applicable. You need a lot of time, digital skills and expensive bandwith.
With DOOIY we want to tackle this problem by creating an accessible platform for solutions that address these everyday challenges and like that improve human wellbeing.

Beta phase start in September 2022, Go-live in January 2023

Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?

Yes. We will especially feature solutions on the platform that follow these design practices.

Does your design use principles of distribution and open source?

Yes. All instructions on the platform are published under Creative Commons (CC BY SA). We encourage people to adapt designs to their local circumstances and share these solutions as well.

Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?

Yes. We will e.g. promote re-use, upcycling and recycling of materials and feature stories about role models in that field.
