Laia Project

Detailed Description

The Laia Project aims to combat gentrification and the loss of local identity in cities like Barcelona by preserving local knowledge and fostering community engagement through mindful use of technology. Starting in the El Clot neighborhood, the project seeks to create a scalable platform for building resilient, sustainable, and equitable communities globally.

Project Details

In your project's current stage of development, how does it align with the OPENNESS value of the Distributed Design Platform?

At the current stage of the Laia Project, Openness is extremely relevant. We are committed to creating an open and reproducible framework, which includes documenting all the steps we have followed, from initial community research to prototype development and data collection. Our goal is to make the Laia Project open source so that it can be implemented in different urban contexts around the world.

In your project's current stage of development, how does it align with the COLLABORATIVE value of the Distributed Design Platform?

Collaboration is fundamental to the Laia Project. From the beginning, we have worked closely with the El Clot community and local associations to ensure that the project reflects the needs and collective knowledge of the residents. We organize community workshops (for example with the Adult School of El Clot) and use their input to improve and adapt Laia, ensuring that the technology effectively responds to their needs.

In your project's current stage of development, how does it align with the REGENERATIVE value of the Distributed Design Platform?

Laia's goal is to address the root causes of disconnection and isolation in neighborhoods by promoting renewed community connections and strengthening the social fabric. We aim to create more resilient, sustainable and equitable communities by restoring and valuing local systems rather than simply replacing them.

In your project's current stage of development, how does it align with the ECOSYSTEMIC value of the Distributed Design Platform?

We find Ecosystemism is very relevant. We recognize the complexity of interactions within urban communities and work to design solutions that improve the health of both social and environmental systems. By encouraging community participation and using technology responsibly, we seek to create a positive and lasting impact on neighborhoods while respecting and valuing their cultural and natural diversity.
