Detailed Description

The Libre Solar Box demonstrates as a small-scaled energy system how regenerative energy supply with photovoltaics and battery storage works. The understanding can be transferred to larger systems and thus contribute to the renewable energy transition.
Especially because the hardware and software are open-source, anyone can study, develop, improve, modify, build and repair the system.

Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?

Highly relevant. The current system layout is modular and can be adopted to any local requirement. For that the active participation is very important so that the actual users of the system can directly edit the design files and change the needed components and materials. For example: changing the type of battery, the battery capacity or the power of PV panels.

Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?

Highly relevant. The solarbox design is for implementing a renewable energy systems so that the needed electrical power can be generated distributed, locally and regeneratively. So it contributes significantly to the renewable energy transition with a buttom-up approach from the citizen building their own energy systems.

Does your design use principles of distribution and open source?

Highly relevant. The current development takes place in a git-based environment (self hosted gitlab). With that the design documentation including CAD files, bill of materials and assembly guideline can be shared and accessed openly so everyone can contribute.

Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?

Highly relevant. The design has a mainly technical usage (energy generation) but the integration of the design as well as the redesign and modification processes need cultural and natural interactions. Knowledge transfer for the design parameters and manufacturing steps involves the cultural backround of the citizen, the natural environment is needed to consider to calculate the system parameters.
