Detailed Description
The idea is to merge biotech and fashion, demonstrating innovation in materials, technologies, and digital fabrication and mutating the concept of wearables to a human-microorganism symbiosis. This project re-imagines how clothes are made by creating fully fashioned, seamless, fabricated garments engineered in lab using technologies rather than through a cut & sew manufacturing process, resulting in reduced material waste, resource usage, Bio-degradable materials, shortened supply chains and ultimately tackling sustainability.
Project Details
- Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?
The project Coralle represents the culmination of my personal efforts, as I took on the responsibility of designing the collection, creating bio materials, and digitally fabricating the designs. Every aspect of the project was executed locally, reflecting my commitment to promoting local craftsmanship and minimizing the carbon footprint. While I worked independently on this endeavor, I recognize the immense potential for collaboration with individuals from diverse design backgrounds and material scientists in various stages of the process.
The scope for collaboration throughout the project is significant, as it offers the opportunity to tap into a wealth of knowledge and expertise from various disciplines. Working alongside designers from different backgrounds and partnering with material scientists would enrich the project, infusing it with fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. Such collaborations have the potential to unlock new creative possibilities, foster cross-pollination of ideas, and push the boundaries of sustainable fashion even further.
Overall, while Coralle stands as a testament to my individual dedication, I am excited about the prospect of future collaborations, as they hold the potential to amplify the impact and reach of the project, fostering a vibrant and inclusive ecosystem of design and sustainability.
- Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?
Coralle is a transformative collection that acts as a bridge between fashion and nature, embodying a deep commitment to sustainability. Meticulously designed and executed, it minimizes environmental impact through the use of bio-degradable and compostable materials like Sodium Alginate, Glycerine, and wool. Notably, the collection's regenerative approach shines through the cultivation of macroalgae, which aids in carbon sequestration, climate cooling, and soil stabilization. By embracing macroalgae, Coralle actively contributes to the restoration of underwater ecosystems while showcasing the beauty of sustainable fashion. It serves as an inspirational catalyst for the industry, driving a shift towards responsible and environmentally conscious design practices, nurturing the environment for the well-being of present and future generations.
- Does your design use principles of distribution and open source?
The project Coralle is an open-source endeavor, embracing transparency and accessibility. Detailed steps and information about the project can be found on the attached website in previous question, providing a comprehensive understanding of each stage. The design process is rooted in transparency, with a strong emphasis on locally made production at FabLab Barcelona.
By adopting an open-source approach, Coralle encourages knowledge sharing and collaboration within the wider creative community. It invites individuals from diverse backgrounds to explore the project, learn from its processes, and contribute to its evolution. This open exchange of ideas fosters innovation and empowers others to engage in sustainable design practices.
The local production at FabLab Barcelona reflects a commitment to supporting local craftsmanship and minimizing the environmental impact associated with transportation and outsourcing. By keeping the production process close to the source, Coralle promotes a more sustainable and community-oriented approach to fashion.
In summary, Coralle's open-source nature and local production at FabLab Barcelona embody a commitment to transparency, knowledge sharing, and sustainable practices. It serves as an inspiration for others to engage with the project, contribute their expertise, and collectively strive towards a more inclusive and environmentally conscious fashion industry.
- Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?
Coralle serves as a harmonious bridge connecting the realms of fashion and nature. With a steadfast commitment to sustainability, every aspect of the collection has been thoughtfully designed and executed. Embracing the ethos of responsible fashion, the utilization of biodegradable materials and the adoption of digital fabrication techniques have resulted in minimal to no material wastage throughout the entire production process.
The project beautifully showcases a seamless collaboration between traditional fabricating techniques and modern methods of fabrication. By blending time-honored craftsmanship with innovative approaches, Coralle epitomizes the harmonious synergy between human artistry and the wonders of nature. It demonstrates the potential for coexistence and how the two can work in tandem to create breathtaking pieces that honor both creativity and environmental consciousness.
