Short Description

A more sustainable toothpaste packaging design, from an accessibility point of view

Detailed Description

ATOM is my bachelor thesis project. The aim of my research was creating a new toothpaste packaging design based on the 7 Principles of Inclusive Design. Thus, I've created 3 prototypes, ATOm being the third and final one. The packaging prototype we have created uses a spring powered mechanism , solely powered by the push of one’s thumb on the side button. This should require minimal force, since the packaging is made out of light plastic. The button powers a peg, which then sends the spring up to deliver the product at the top of the bottle. The force created by pushing the button should also be able to hold the platform up here. The bottle was created in such a way that it would be easily stackable. The brand was created to reflect current graphic trends. This allows it to be read by anyone without much hassle. The font used was Nexa Bold. There is also Braille writing inside the logo and on the right side of the right side of the bottle there are instructions on how to use the product

Project Details

Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?

By including ageing and disabled people in the design process

Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?

The classic toothpaste tube is not recyclable and does not promote sustainable consumption. My prototype can be used in such a way that all contents of the tube are used and can be made using recycled materials.

Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?

Yes - the design is made in respect with all differences in ability and was created with sustainability in mind
