Short Description

BIOBASED MATERIALS is a research project on materials obtained from biomass.

Detailed Description

BIO-BASED MATERIALS is a research project on materials obtained from biomass. The objective is to investigate an alternative to conventional materials that often have a great negative impact on the environment. The development of these materials obtained from biomass would not only be an improvement for the planet, but could also offer new sensations, colors, textures, smells and interactions between the user and the object. The project, in addition to being an introduction to DIY Materials, also shows several open source recipes made with easy-to-obtain ingredients that are mixed with waste. These DIY materials can be used for prototyping or final products. This project was developed in 2017/2018 as a Final Degree Project in Product Design at the EASD Valencia.

Project Details

Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?

Materials obtained from biomass can in some cases replace petroleum-based materials and replace them with local waste ingredients.

Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?

These materials are not as durable as conventional plastics or other materials, however, under optimal conditions, products made from these materials can last for years. I have 5-year-old samples that are preserved in perfect condition. The advantage is that they degrade when they are introduced into the environment and can be used by microorganisms.

Does your design use principles of distribution and open source?

The memory of the project is under a Creative Commons license with attribution to the author and is published on several free access websites such as rehogar.net. Although many projects have been developed based on my research, attribution to the author is rare. However, I know that many students and professionals from many parts of the world have benefited from my work (although not all admit it). In addition, the complete project has been exhibited at various design fairs since 2018, such as in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Bilbao and Germany, where many people have had access to the memory of the project and the samples and products as well.

Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?

En la memoria del proyecto reflexiono sobre los modelos de producción industrial frente a otros tipos de producción más tradicionales y de ritmo más pausado, donde el material y su origen son determinantes a la hora de desarrollar los productos.
