Short Description
Application of auxetic materials for the furnishing and textile industry
Detailed Description
“Doing more with less” is what has driven the development of Auxoide.
Cushioning materials, like polyurethane or memory foam, are voluminous, absorb moisture, retain heat and release VOCs overtime.
The solution is a material that could support body weight, offer the same comfort of foams while promoting perspiration, save space during transportations, compete with foams’ affordability and encourage a circular system .
Auxoide is a textile composite made of a fabric support and an injection-molded auxetic pattern that can be shaped as cushions from a flat sheet. Each cell of the matrix absorbs and spreads a load evenly. Auxetic materials are man-made materials firstly discovered in the 80’. They have a negative Poisson’s ratio, making them able to stretch and compress in all directions, supporting loads and impacts.
Following the design of the first ever auxetic patterns, it has been possible to build an algorithm able to calculate original patterns suited for cushioning solutions.
Project Details
- Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?
These structures prevent injuries from prolonged sitting, spreading the load on each cell of the matrix and limiting stress of users’ hips.
- Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?
Auxoide applies a minimalistic approach to material development aimed to replicate the same comfort of foam but with a shapeshifting textile of a couple of millimeters in thickness that can go from flat to tridimensional. Despite being a composite, both plastic and fabric parts can be separated and recycled or reused, easing the user journey at the end of the cushion’s life
- Does your design use principles of distribution and open source?
Auxoide promotes transparency of its simple design to encourage more application of auxetic materials into more diverse fields.
- Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?
The simplicity of Auxoide’s design promotes a minimalistic approach to creating that promotes the philosophy of doing more with less, without giving up comfort and quality.
