Lamp re-use woodwork offcuts locally sourced multifunctional handmade

Short Description

IsYdora is a lamp made with woodwork offcuts that can be used in different ways around the house.

Detailed Description

ISYDORA is a multifunctional lamp which aims to make better use of natural resources, and is made from woodwork offcuts otherwise doomed to become firewood. The constructive “keystone” is a joint which merges three squared beams, without the use of screws or nails.
The design is inspired by Japanese culture and the lamp is a very simple and pure object, without redundant elements. It is composed of a single and sturdy lighting body, but it is versatile and can be used as a table, wall or side-table lamp. It is equipped with energy saving LED lights, inlaid into the hidden sides of the structure.
The lamp can be attached to and detached from the wall, or any other surface, using a discreet neodimio magnetic coupling system.
I have designed two versions, one supplied by an electric cable and the other battery-powered, cordless and portable.
Apart from the electrical components it is entirely handmade in my workshop and its wooden parts are locally sourced from woodwork offcuts so as to m

Project Details

Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?

ISYDORA's gentle light is calming and can create a warm social environment, or a light to relax and read by. Its versatility reduces the need for overconsumption/waste/helps it fit into people’s changing lives. Above all, I believe human well-being lies not only in the balance and sustainability of the product itself but also on the way it is built. ISYDORA is not the fruit of chain production but of the care and love that goes into the making process of every single piece of it.

Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?

The idea behind ISYDORA was born from the drive to re-use woodwork offcuts. Indeed when I used to work for a local artisan I felt the need to give another life to these beautiful pieces of wood. The offcuts are gathered from local wood workshops or factories and then transformed and assembled in my workshop. As a craftsman, I build the lamps by hand and take care of every single step. I'd like to optimize the handmade productive process and I'd hope to find and use electrical components which are made in the EU with recycled material so to reduce the impact on the environment.

Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?

My lamp is a long-lasting product made with reused materials. Being a craftsperson I give a lot of importance to making things by hand and using as little as possible electrical machinery. ISYDORA is the fruit of both my desire to make beautiful and lasting objects with my hands and the need of reusing and reducing waste. It is a lamp which can last for a lifetime and that you can bring with you wherever your next home is.
