Short Description
HelloHealth - a catalog of replicable and accessible open-source medical devices.
Detailed Description
HelloHealth is a project which aims to bring accessibility to healthcare to the underserved communities of the world. This project aims to aim to tackle the challenge of accessibility by using a combination of low-cost medical devices, a distributed manufacturing network, this will be done using the MakerSpace Network by designing the devices out of standard electronics inventory and a community to develop and expand it which will be an online repository on managed repository which will act as the central node for the community to gather and discuss and maintain the designs and codes required to make these devices.HelloHealth takes inspiration from the “HelloWorld” code which is universal when learning a new coding language. Expected outcomes of the project are blueprints of the future open-source biomedical devices that could be replicated in case of an emergency in disaster areas, using standard machines with standard protocols for testing, calibration, and use.
Project Details
- Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?
HelloHealth is a project that is about bringing accessible healthcare devices to people in need and to the underserved regions of the world. The people in rural cities have always been at a disadvantage in accessing healthcare due to the medical devices being expensive, expensive setup costs of the hospital, and lack of human capital. This project aims to tackle that using cheap - reliable ways to deploy medical devices that are easy to use which could possibly be used by tertiary healthcare workers in those remote parts of the world.
Thus any device which is capable of being used in any remote parts of the world can be replicated in a lab in the city in times of a global pandemic. COVID-19 has shown us the power of distributed design and manufacturing, Thus HelloHealth aims to be an overarching project which would serve as the base from which these devices could be made from, i.e. standardized electronics circuitry, manufacturing methodologies and calibration, sterilization protocols, to user manuals.
- Does your design use principles of distribution and open source?
The repository of these medical devices is maintained on WIkifactory: https://wikifactory.com/+hellohealth . Thus all the designs and codes are opensource. Thus anyone with the right tooling could replicate these devices in a lab.
- Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?
HelloHealth aims to have a modular structure for the devices that can be replicated on any level. Thus the inventory needed for the project is limited thus making it more responsible design and consumption in a way that also helps increase the accessibility of the project.
