About the project
The Museum of Colonization (MOC) Tour is a free, immersive walking tour designed to decolonize the historical narrative of Barcelona. It reveals the often-invisible legacy of colonization, challenges ingrained colonial perspectives, and inspires co-creations of decolonial futures, particularly highlighting the ongoing impact on marginalized communities. Through a guided exploration of key city sites, the tour unveiled hidden layers of colonial history and fosters critical reflection. The guides are everyone who participates – the space is held by the MOC collective who developed the tour in 2023 as a final project of their master’s program.
About the approach
The MOC Tour employs a community-centered, polyphonic storytelling approach, prioritizing the voices of those impacted by colonial structures. This fosters healing and empowers participants to collectively redesign regenerative futures.
By “MOCing” – recentering narratives and enabling pluriversal design perspectives – we aim to cultivate an open and collaborative learning environment. Embracing the discomfort of shared history, we use humor and engaging methods to create a “brave space” for understanding. This approach aligns with DDD platform’s values by promoting open dialogue, collaborative knowledge-sharing, and a regenerative mindset, acknowledging the interconnectedness of historical systems and advocating for ecosystemic change.
About the design collective
The MOC is a project created in 2023 by Marielle, Carolina and Stella. This project exists because we believe the world is a museum of colonization, but you just don’t see it. The MOC as a collective of artists, activist, and allies is here to help notice, challenge colonial thought, and dream of decolonial futures.
We put emphasis on playful and thought-provoking ways to “MOC” our current norms and standards. Our projects aim to make decolonial education accessible – often using comedy, satire, and radical softness/love to approach the topic. We believe that the stories we tell shape the world! So, we choose to tell them in a fun, interactive, and engaging way to bring healing and joy into our lives and communities.
