[MOOC] Collaborative and sustainable practices

About the project

Welcome to the MOOC “Collaborative and sustainable practices”

The opportunity of the application and joining to a standardised circular model and system

Introducing the immersive MOOC “Collaborative and Sustainable Practices,” where we bring you a lineup of expert speakers who will guide you through four enlightening topics. Get ready to dive into the world of collaborative design and sustainable innovation as we explore new frontiers in design thinking and practice.

In Topic 1, “Collaborative Practices with Open Design,” Massimo Menichinelli, a renowned expert in the field, will unveil the transformative power of open design and collaborative practices. Discover how collective creativity and shared knowledge can shape the future of design.

Enrico Bassi from OpenDot takes the stage in Topic 2, “Circular Making: The Makers Movement’s Role in the Circular Economy.” Join us as we explore the critical role of the makers movement in driving circular economy practices and transforming the way we make and consume.

In Topic 3, “Blockchain: Cryptochain Digital Commons,” Karim Esry from Espacio Open will introduce you to the exciting world of blockchain technology and its potential to create digital commons. Explore the possibilities of decentralized collaboration and innovative ways of sharing and co-creating.

Marion Real, an expert in sustainable practices, will guide us through Topic 4, “Shifting Mindsets for Sustainable Practices.” Learn how to embrace new mindsets and adopt systemic practices in design, empowering you to make a positive impact on the environment and society.

Join us on this transformative journey, where you’ll gain invaluable knowledge, skills, and inspiration to drive collaborative and sustainable practices in your own projects and initiatives. Together, let’s shape a more inclusive and regenerative future through design.

Collaborative Practices with Open Design

Reaching sustainability is a systemic challenge of transitioning to new practices, behaviors, infrastructures, artifacts, services, systems. Given the systemic nature of such transition, collaboration among multiple actors and stakeholders is increasingly an important strategy for reaching sustainability. Open Source communities have developed principles and practices for building from small scale to large scale successful collaborative processes. Adopting open source principles and practices in designing artifacts, services and systems gives many possibilities for designers and makers, and while this is often done thanks to digital technologies, it is mainly about a new culture of designing, making and collaboration that can transform our everyday practices with collaboration and sharing.

Massimo Menichinelli Doctor of Arts in New Media (Aalto University) & Master of Science in Industrial Design (Politecnico di Milano), is a designer who researches and develops open, collaborative, and co-design projects and the systems that enable them since 2005. Massimo uses design tools and processes in order to help companies, organizations, cities and local communities to develop open and collaborative processes, business, services, places and projects he is currently Associate Professor (Profesor Contratado Doctor) at ELISAVA – Barcelona School of Design and Engineering (UVic-UCC).

Circular making, the makers movement’s role in the circular economy

The transition towards a more circular economy is one of the most ambitious and important objectives at the European level.

While some actors – such as policy makers or big companies, might have a clear set of objectives and possible strategies to reach them, the maker’s movement role is not equally explored. This masterclass shows the possible strategies that fablabs, makerspaces, and local groups of innovators can deploy to be a catalyst of positive change. Together we will explore best practices and examples of projects developed in OpenDot during the last five years.

OpenDot
OpenDot is a hub for research, experimentation, rapid prototyping and open innovation. We work to make a positive impact through co-design and technology.

Enrico Bassi who graduated in “Design & Engineering” and “Product Design” at the Polytechnic University of Milan, coordinated the first Italian Fab Lab (digital manufacturing laboratory) in 2011: Fab Lab Italia. Subsequently, he was president and coordinator of FabLab Torino, the public lab of Officine Arduino. In 2015, he completed FabAcademy. In 2016, he became an Instructor and Global Reviewer for the new edition of the Fab Academy, held at the Opendot Fab Lab, which he has coordinated since 2014 (www.opendotlab.it). For Opendot, he also supervises European and international projects on the topic of circular economy (https://reflowproject.eu/) and sustainable and healthy diet (https://feast2030.eu/). He has taught and continues to teach Digital Manufacturing and Design Engineering at various universities and academies, including: LABA (Free Academy of Fine Arts, Brescia), NABA (New Academy of Fine Arts, Milan), Domus Academy (Milan) and the Master of Advanced Studies in Interaction Design at SUPSI (Lugano).

Shifting mindsets for sustainable practices

“Sustainable” is one of the core values of the Distributed Design platform since its inception. What do the DD community members want to express by stating this? After briefly proposing a critical overview of the “sustainability” concept, the course will present a series of mental models and tools that will help designers in better adopting a systemic perspective in their (future) design interventions, when locally addressing the needs for more convivial, circular and regenerative lifestyles.

Marion Real  Systemic Design and Co-creation Researcher

Marion Real is a systemic design researcher exploring co-creation processes in the territorial transformations toward circular economies and cosmopolitan localism. At Fab Lab Barcelona, she works at the crossroads of productive cities and material & textiles research areas in various projects touching circular design such as Siscode, Remix el Barrio, Score, Shemakes and Reservist.
