Embrace the power of digital connectivity, communication, and forward-thinking design to unlock new opportunities and drive your creative endeavors to new heights.
Driven by Distributed Design
Distributed Design has its origins in maker culture and celebrates tinkering, hacking and serious play but it also has the potential to reduce the environmental and social impact of manufacturing and engage consumers to become active citizens through making.
The central question is not only how objects and data themselves can be distributed, but also value and power. The contemporary distributed designer needs to be able to embody multiple perspectives but instead of the nodes being those of customers and clients they must also include communities, objects, rivers, companies, and all living beings. Designing this way is an opportunity to experience and become aware of the complex systems behind things, which in turn can change your mindset.
Nat Hunter is a designer, educator and coach, currently exploring how regenerative culture and organisational behaviour can positively impact people, society and the planet. A systems thinker and agitator for change, she brings my experience in business, design and coaching together in order to create and support change. Most recently, in 2021 she co-created the influential Design Council report Beyond Net Zero: A Systemic Design Approach, researching and disseminating the optimal conditions and techniques for lasting systemic change. She is currently a Design For Planet Fellow at the Design Council, is running workshops internationally and supporting organisations to create regenerative culture
Gareth Owen Lloyd is the director of Other Today, a London based design studio that promotes the power of Distributed, Circular and Open design to radically reduce planetary impact, shift power & create a fairer society. Founded with Nat Hunter, the studio explores how regenerative culture and organisational behaviour can positively impact people, society and the planet. Senior Lecturer at Brighton University where Other Today run the Distributed Design studio on the Product Design with Professional Experience BSc(Hons)
Future(s) Design and making alternative presents
The Future(s) Design masterclass will encourage participants to transition from a speculative design approach towards a more open, participatory consideration of future forecasting through making, where alternative presents are prototyped and probed with and within hyperlocal socio/technical systems. We will guide participants through toolkits, exercises and activations they can use to reframe their practice within the possibilities of distributed design.
Mariana Quintero Emergent Futures Strategic Advisor
Multimedia developer, interaction designer and researcher. Mariana Quintero develops her practice at the intersection where digital fabrication technologies, digital literacy and the ethics and aesthetics of information and computation meet, contributing to projects that investigate the rise of the third digital revolution and how information and digital technologies translate, represent and mediate knowledge about the world. She is currently part of the strategic direction of the Master in Design for Emerging Futures MDEF and regularly contributes to various research projects at IAAC | Fab Lab Barcelona.
Alejandra Tothill Design Researcher
Product developer, Spatial designer and researcher. Alejandra (Jana) Tothill develops her practice at the intersection between academia and industry, between art and design, where digital fabrication technologies, digital literacy and the ethics and aesthetics of information and computation meet, contributing to projects that investigate the rise of the third digital revolution and how information and digital technologies translate, represent and mediate knowledge about the world. She is currently part of the strategic direction of the Master in Design for Emerging Futures MDEF
Communicating Creative and Cultural Practices
The Communicating Creative and Cultural practices masterclass will cover the basics of effectively communicating your work. We’ll explore: how you identify your community; how to describe what you do; how you create your community; and how to make content. The class will reference successful examples of communicating design and will close with a practical exercise to help prepare you to make your own content.
