Short Description
Eggs-like is a project which aims to demonstrate the qualities of an eggshell-based material.
Detailed Description
A collection of storage vessels was made using eggshells, water, gelatin and coffee grounds. The shell of the egg is a material full of calcium, which allows it to be developed into a stone-like material. One can source eggshells from their own kitchen, as well as from restaurants, cafes or bakeries. The waste quantities are enormous. Almost 13 kilos of eggshells were used for the development of this project.
While experimenting with the material, I realized that the best outcomes were developed through the process of compression molding. The molds used for the final collection were 3D printed and could be used multiple times without undergoing any damage. Developing my own way of making products ‘from scratch’, a collection of storage vessels was created which consists of 3 different designs. The different colour shades of the collection resulted from adding coffee grounds to the eggshell mixture. The more the coffee grounds - the darker the colour.

- Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?
My design takes social and cultural challenges as it sources its main material (eggshells) from nowadays' waste.
- Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?
The production of the eggshell collection does not include the use of enormous energy sources. The making of the eggshell material needs a couple of minutes on the hob and the 3D printed moulds can be used multiple times. It's a process that mainly requires the collection of eggshells on a daily basis, to get the production started.
- Does your design use principles of distribution and open source?
My design could use principles of distribution and open source as it could educate and essentially challenge people into making their own eggshell products. The eggshell-biomaterial recipe is available online, and people can source eggshells from their own kitchen. By saving up their eggshells and making products out of them, people could start realizing the amazing uses of waste that we should all take advantage of!
- Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?
My design promotes awareness of responsible design and consumption as it does no harm to the environment. The collection was created by only using waste/natural materials and thus the products biodegrade in water. They can be turned into compost if left in the soil.
