Short Description

-

A disruptive approach to materials science and circle design, developing accessible open source data

Detailed Description

-

"The creative industry meets academia through an experimental approach to materials science. STEAMhouse, a UK based makerspace, in collaboration with Materiom, the open source data platform, have developed the BioBox, to encourage circular design principles and disruptive materials development.

The BioBox is a postal kit, which includes natural ingredients used in conjunction with open source recipes. It facilitates a practical approach to materials science and circle design principles, enabling individuals to incorporate their own local waste streams into new sustainable material developments. Facilitated by digital technology, the cross disciplinary community enrolled on the short programme actively collaborate on materials research, cultivating new knowledge and a shared responsibility for sustainable materials development.

This is an adapted approach to physical workshops allowing for wider participation with a lower bar to entry, encouraging all to engage, learn and share knowle

Project Details

-

Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?

"The BioBox project focuses on developing a greener future through development of an accessible frame work to educate, enable and connect innovators. It harnesses technology to cultivate communities of researchers based on shared principles of openness and progress.
Accessibility to this programme is essential, developing a language that both individuals, businesses, large industry and education can understand and connect through.
"

Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?

"Circle design principles and sustainable futures are at the core of this project. Using only natural materials and re purposing domestic and commercial waste streams to come up with materials solutions that respect and regenerate our natural resources.
Through this programme we educate and encourage practical problem solving based on local abundant materials.
"

Does your design use principles of distribution and open source?

"Our project and all data is open source and accessible to all.
It is an adapted approach to physical workshops allowing for wider participation with a lower bar to entry, encouraging all to engage and learn. It has the potential to be scaled, globally distributed and applied locally to various creative research projects at all levels, to cultivate relationships based on shared principles of openness and progress.
"

Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?

This project looks to actively challenge our consumption habits through education and develop responsible design as a key component when measuring successful design.
