Short Description

Airwal is a bio-safety aspirator designed for a post-pandemic dining experience.

Detailed Description

During the quarantine period, people are fighting against the physical and psychic effects of isolation. For this reason, we decide to design Airwal, a bio-safety aspirator embedded into a table and designed to avoid the spread of infections during pandemic and post-pandemic times, taking into account the physical and psychological health of users. The product uses the flow of the air sanitised by the filters to act as a barrier between Covid-19 and users within daily interactions, keeping the environment clean and disinfected. From a technological perspective, the team was inspired by the operating system of biological safety cabinets which, equipped with high-efficiency air filters, are designed to protect the operators of biological laboratories and the work environment from the risk of exposure to aerosols of pathogens. The product is not in production yet, but the team aims to put the project into production finding a manufacturer that is appropiate for the product’s needs.

Project Details

Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?

The team believes that the major challenge the world is facing right now is the spread of Covid-19. This product uses the flow of the air sanitised by the filters to act as a barrier between Covid-19 and users within daily interactions, keeping the environment clean and disinfected. In these challenging times, which are limiting our moments of shared interactions, it is really important to have the opportunity to undertake an experience to the full without the fear of infecting each other. Indeed, during the quarantine period, people are fighting against the psychic and physical effects of isolation. With this solution, the team wants to face the importance of shared times during daily rituals such as dining together, imagining the future of interactions and restaurant experiences in a post-pandemic scenario.

Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?

Our product is not in production yet but it is designed to embody circular practices. Indeed, the product is designed in aluminium , one of the most sustainable material on the planet. Aluminium is infinitely recyclable and highly durable. Indeed, nearly 75 per cent of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today. Aluminium is 100 per cent recyclable and retains its properties indefinitely.

Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?

We believe that our product can have a positive impact on our collective societal and environmental benefits as it makes possible again the interaction between people during the unprecedented and challenging times of a pandemic. We believe that our product represents a creative solution that can disrupt the global system, currently weighed down by the complex consequence of the Covid-19 spread over the world, promoting positive and responsible values.
