Short Description

-

Tackling the textile waste problem with designing for a product longevity and a chemical recycling.

Detailed Description

-

The project was developed to reduce textile waste, which our current linear ‘take, make, dispose’ fashion industry has caused.
Circo is a classic and unisex white T-shirt made from 100% hemp. The product is designed to have a long life span by creating a shape, which is suitable for men and women at every age, and by using hemp fibres, which are strong and durable. Additionally, hemp is an environmentally responsible material. Its cultivation doesn't require pesticides, and water footprint is significantly lower than for example in cotton cultivation.

At the end of the T-shirt's life, it is ground into a fine powder, without needing to disassemble the product first, because it includes only cellulose based fibres; a hemp knit and a sewing thread made from cotton. The fine powder is chemically converted into new virgin-equivalent Ioncell®-fibres. The process enables a circular material resource, and it reduces the need of virgin material resources.

Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?

Hemp fibres requires small amount of water and usually no extra irrigation is needed in the cultivation stage, thus more safe drinking water is available.

Hemp is a multi-functional crop; all parts can be used for different purposes: for food, textiles, paper, cosmetics, biofuel, bioplastic, building products, just to few to mention. Additionally it needs less cultivation area than cotton, and produces more fibre, thus more land can be used in a food crop cultivation.

Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?

I have chosen a sustainable material for my product. Additionally, the product is designed for longevity, and it can be upcycled into new material resources.

Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?

My design encourages to prolong the product's life by designing a durable product suitable for various customers in various situations
