Cartasia aims to promote and reinforce the notion that recycled paper, through a very simple process
Detailed Description
The seat of the stool is made with very simple ingredients: paper waste, water and flour. Firsly
paper waste is shredded to small pieces. The pieces are put into a bowl together with water, which
will melt the paper. Then, the mixture is put inside a blender together with flour, that will serve as
a glue. After 3 days the result would be a quite firm mixture. This mixture is put into a stamp of the
seat’s dimensions, then baked at an hot temperature until it becomes solid and ready to be used.

- Does your design take social and cultural challenges and human wellbeing into consideration?
Our project uses recycled and treated papers to develop a new material that can be reused inside the furniture design world. This technique permits to use waste materials to product stable and durable furniture (es. a stool) avoiding the cost of waste disposal and offering objects useful for human wellbeing and the respect of the environment.
- Does your design support sustainable production, embodying circular or regenerative design practices?
Paper is produced processing cellulose fibres derived from wood, rags, grasses or other vegetable
sources in water, draining the water through fine mesh leaving the fibre evenly distributed on the
surface, followed by pressing and drying.
It is one of the materials, along plastic, mostly used for product packaging and therefore, thrown away.
Through experimentation and testing, patterns, forms and shapes where discovered and analyzed
little by little, a lot of prototypes where made to fully understand the capabilities and characteristics of
recycled paper.
- Does your design use principles of distribution and open source?
The waste papers is a wide open source that can be recruited from as industries as social families. The average prize will be affordable due to the cheap production process and the availability of waste materials
- Does your design promote awareness of responsible design and consumption?
Paper waste and recycle process:
- 64% Recyclable
- 14% Burned to produce energy
- 22% Used for other uses or it goes to the dump
Our project is self responsable of the production with the aim to reuse mainly the 22%, that most of the time is not possible to be reused, inside the paper industry.
We propose to integrate this process inside the design world.
